The Truth That Most Fish Keepers Don't Know-Aquarium Heaters
Aquarium heaters are used in most of the aquariums around the world and there are hundreds of manufacture manufacturing aquarium heaters. You may have been suggested or convinced to use an aquarium heater, but that's not always true.
Probably you don't need an aquarium heater unless it is an extreme situation. Most fish in the aquarium hobby can tolerate really cold temperatures (even the tropical fish). Maintaining a proper aquarium temperature is essential but it not that difficult if you know what temperature your aquarium water is, don't blindly think that your aquarium is too cold just by touching it. Your aquariums temperature and the atmospheric temperature of your home is the same, they feel different due to thermal conductivity.

Angel Fish(Pterophyllum sp.) |
The fishes that I'm talking is not just goldfish and some livebearers, it can even be true with tropical fishes. In the wild, the temperature changes from the surface of the water and the bottom of the water body and these fishes constantly swim up and down, so it doesn't matter even if the water temperature fluctuates a bit. If you live in a temperate climate and you heat your house then that's enough for your aquarium also, for some fishes that wouldn't be enough like Betta fishes, etc.,
Even the tropical fishes can tolerate a wider spectrum of temperatures. Now, think practically, in India there is no point in having a heater in an aquarium which only has rosy barbs whereas a lake next door has a natural population of rosy barb thriving. This is because of lack of knowledge, people think that these fishes come from an unknown place and the only place to find this fish is an aquarium shop.
Neon Tetra(Paracheirodon innesi) |
Every aquarium fish come from a familiar place around the world. Most tetras come from amazon basin in South America, except for African tetras like congo tetra, most other south American tetras are from each of the tributaries of the amazon river. Likewise, even corydoras, angelfish, discus fish, rams, plecos ect., are all from tropics of South America. Whereas barns, rasboras, loaches, etc., are from the south and South-East Asia. Where I've seen barbs living in temperatures down to 15° C.
So, decide by yourself whether you need a heater or not, do your research and even if you decide to buy, buy a good one so that you don't have to change it every other day.
